A day of a Child Development Specialist

Who is the Child Development Specialist?

A child developmental specialist is someone who works with children, their parents and educators in assessing a child’s developmental needs and goals.

Working with non-typical children is extremely hard, but when you understand you are their only hope to survive – you know that you do not have any right to give up! When you see their smile, feel their interest and observe their progress, you become the happiest person in the whole world! There is nothing more beautiful seeing a child, that nobody believed in yesterday, making impossible – possible, today!

Kamalya Aliyeva is a Child Development Specialist (also a Coordinator) at Khachmaz CBR center. For about 10 years, she has been working with children and giving them an opportunity to have a better future.

She decided to explain us what is her role and what her typical day looks like.

9:00 AM preparing the materials, gathers documents (concerning the child), analyzes the development plan and prepares for the individual training.
9:15 AM starting the session with the 1st child. Individual sessions usually last about 1 hour.
10:00-11:00 AM group sessions are organized. Usually there are 4-5 children in one group. Sometimes a typical child is invited to be a leader of the group, so other children can experience and see what typical children are interested in, how they behave in certain situations and how they solve different problems.
12:00 PM-1:00 PM individual sessions with another child
1:00 PM – 2:00 PM lunch time
2:00 PM -4:00 PM individual sessions with children
4:00 PM – 5:00 PM making plans, reports and preparations for the next day

Each Friday she also prepares a plan for the next week, by comparing current results with her past observations.

Parents’ meetings are organized once a month, to discuss children’s improvement, problems and development issues. During those meetings specialists also help parents to understand their children better, by counseling them concerning their behavior, habits and the ways parents should treat their children.

In case families have some difficulties and need advice, all our workers are ready to help them. Under the Family Support program – workers can help families to organize an operation, find medical gadgets & medications, get clothes and refer to the relevant state bodies.
